Is a toothache bothering your smile and causing you tooth pain? A painful tooth is difficult to ignore (and really you shouldn’t be ignoring pain, as a general rule), and often interferes with your day-to-day function. Dr. Celeste M. Eckerman and our team understand that a toothache can cause suffering, and today we would like to offer some causes and relief for tooth pain in your smile.
- If you have food lodged between your teeth, the pressure may be causing you pain. This is generally the easiest form of tooth pain to relieve. You can find instant relief after rinsing thoroughly to loosen the debris and following up with gentle brushing and flossing.
- If you have damage to dental work you may find yourself in pain. A dental crown or dental bridge that has sustained damage, or if a filling has come loose, this can cause uncomfortable pressure on the tooth. These are considered dental emergencies, and you will need to see Dr. Celeste M. Eckerman to treat the issues before finding relief.
- If you have an abscessed or infected tooth, pain may be the first indicator. As with damage to dental work, this is also considered a dental emergency requiring a visit to your dentist for treatment and relief.
- If you have tooth decay, you may have a cavity from tooth decay. This also requires a dental intervention. Your dentist will need to remove the decay and fill in the hole with either a composite or amalgam filling. A good indicator of a cavity is not finding relief after brushing, flossing and rinsing with salt water.
